Archaeobotanical studies in Greece mainly focus on the domestic use of plants. Thus far no studies have focused on ritual contexts from the prehistoric era and most of the studies in Europe focus on the Roman period.

This project fills in this gap in the current research by employing, for the first time, targeted research questions and detailed sampling from a variety of ritual contexts from Greece in an attempt to elucidate the role of plants and food in the ritual landscape. As a result, it focuses on a subject currently underrepresented in European research, generating new data sets in order to approach the spheres of ritual deposition and sacrifice with another set of materials, other than human and animal bones, and pottery.

Publications based on detailed sampling in Greece and Cyprus by now form one of the larger available data sets on this topic in European archaeology.
